Birdman

In Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ‘Birdman’ (which will close the New York Film Festival this weekend and, I'll add, is my favorite movie of the year), Michael Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, a veteran actor whose biggest claim to fame is that he used to be in a series of superhero movies. Now, Riggan is attempting to make his comeback by staging a Broadway play based on a Raymond Carver short story. It’s been lost on no one that Michael Keaton also used to be in a series of superhero movies and hasn’t had the most prolific output over the last 15 years – and is, now, making a comeback (of sorts) with ‘Birdman.’ For his part, Michael Keaton is distancing himself from this comparison, telling New York Magazine, “I related less to him than almost every other character I’ve played, in terms of the desperation.”

The 2014 New York Film Festival was already looking to be a can't-miss event for cinephiles, given its previous announcements of gala screenings of David Fincher's 'Gone Girl,' Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Inherent Vice' and Alejandro G. Iñárritu's 'Birdman,' but the announcement of the festival's Main Slate selections brings with it some of the most highly anticipated titles of the year.

Fox Searchlight released the first 'Birdman' trailer, featuring Michael Keaton as a washed-up actor known mainly for portraying a superhero, and it is one helluva of a preview. Evocative and dark, funny and strange, the footage has done what all trailers set out to do: it took something we didn't care about and made us desperate to see it.

Director Alejandro González Iñárritu has knack for attracting impressive names to his movies and his upcoming 'Birdman' is no exception. Emma Stone, Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis have all joined the project, which sounds like an interesting left turn for a filmmaker usually known for his pitch black dramas.
