Even diehard fans of HBO’s Scorsese-Jagger driven Vinyl knew that Season 2 would bring about some significant changes, but it looks like the record skipped after all. Despite setting a new showrunner after a formal Season 2 renewal, HBO has officially abandoned plans for Vinyl, effectively cancelling the prestigious flop.

For all the time and effort HBO’s Vinyl took getting out of the studio, the Martin Scorsese-Mick Jagger joint certainly skipped a few beats in its February debut. That didn’t stop HBO from ordering a second season, but now showrunner Terence Winter will depart, as the ‘70s music drama retools creatively in Season 2.

Let’s face it, when Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger collaborate on a new rock drama at HBO, it’s getting a second season. Still, following an inauspicious start in the ratings, Vinyl has been confirmed for a second season to air in 2017, just one episode into its run.

Seemingly in production forever (and without a name), HBO’s Mick Jagger-Martin Scorsese music drama Vinyl hit all the right chords by its first trailer, even if its February premiere managed to push back Game of Thrones. Granted we’ve barely made it out of October, HBO has us accustomed to a certain winter premiere schedule, among it the girls of Girls heading back to Brooklyn in January. Now, HBO seems to have shifted its schedule a bit, pushing premieres of Girls Season 5, Scorsese-Jagger rock drama Vinyl, and Mark Duplass’ Togetherness to February 2016.

Our long national nightmare ended last week when HBO finally christened its “Untitled Rock & Roll Drama” Vinyl, a catchy name for the likes of series lead Bobby Cannavale, and executive producers Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger. Only those at TCA caught the first trailer, but HBO has at least offered a small tease of all the sex, drugs, and you guessed it, rock and roll.

For months, HBO’s high-profile “Untitled Rock & Roll Drama” with Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese has pooled talent the likes of Bobby Cannavale and Olivia Wilde, all without so much as the suggestion of a name. Now the pay cable network has finally gifted us with the simple-yet-perfect moniker Vinyl, also setting a 2016 premiere for the new music drama.
