It’s that time again — if you aren’t one of those obsessive compulsive Halloween lovers who have already planned out their costume weeks or even months in advance, chances are you’re scrambling for ideas for what to wear next week. If you also count yourself as a big fan of movies (and you do, which is why you are here), you might find yourself wanting to wear a costume inspired by one of this year’s new releases. Don’t, we repeat, do not be one of those people who buys a costume in a bag at a Halloween super store. There are plenty of ways for you to have a cool movie-inspired costume and show off your creativity without caving in and dressing as Sexy Pizza Rat.

The success of Hotel Transylvania 2 proved that family-friendly horror-themed movies stand to make a whole bunch of cash when released in the vicinity of Halloween. Now, Goosebumps is here to ensure that we’ll be getting slightly scary kids’ movies every October for the foreseeable future. The adaptation of the popular book series opened at number one, riding a wave of nostalgia and family appeal to a very strong start, beating out some pretty serious competition.

Guillermo del Toro‘s Twitter account is a wonderful place. While the rest of us are clogging the internet-tubes with #hottakes and making the same lame joke about future World Overlord Donald Trump for the eightieth time, the Mexican filmmaker has been grinding out recommendations to help viewers better prepare to see his new horror gothic romance film Crimson Peak. Though our own Matt Singer was no great fan of the film, many critics have dealt the baroque spookfest resoundingly positive notices, praising the film’s elegant style. Del Toro has been more than willing to give his credit where credit is due and specifically recognize the works that assisted him in the realization of his vision. But amidst the abstract painting and fantasy novel recommendations, del Toro provided a tantalizing prospect for the future.

Crimson Peak is an absolutely gorgeous movie. Sumptuous even, if you like big words. Do not be surprised if you see Guillermo del Toro’s gothic-romance-horror movie eventually nominated for some Costume and Production Design Oscars in a few months. But, as star Jessica Chastain told us, there’s actually more to Allerdale Hall, the haunted house at the center of the film, than you might even be aware. In fact, if you look closely, there are actually hidden, subliminal messages within the walls.

Alfred Hitchcock had a saying: “Logic is dull.” On the basis of Crimson Peak, it’s pretty clear Guillermo del Toro feels the same way.

Tom Hiddleston, despite being an otherwise extremely pleasant and lovely human being, has a habit of playing some evil dudes. There’s Loki, from The Avengers, Adam from Only Lovers Left Alive, and now Thomas Sharpe in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak. What do directors see in this charming actor to cast him as an antihero? Is he secretly a monster? Does he hate Beyoncé and puppies? We caught up with Hiddleston recently to talk about Crimson Peak and to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Fantastic Fest is easily one of the best, most fun, most insane, and most booze-soaked film festivals in the world.
