“A bunch of hilarious people have one crazy, drunken night” is a familiar plot, and thanks to last year’s The Night Before, we’ve seen what happens when you put that in the context of holiday spirit — which makes this trailer for Office Christmas Party kind of impressive, considering how amusing it looks despite the fact that it feels like something we’ve seen before (Jillian Bell included).

‘Mother’s Day’ Review: Garry Marshall Destroys Another Holiday
There’s no silence quieter than the one in a movie theater during an bad comedy. At times during Mother’s Day, director Garry Marshall’s newest debasement of a beloved holiday, a hush fell over the theater to rival the quietude at a Benedictine monastery. When the laughter finally came, it’s always at the movie’s expense. This disaster is less deliberately funny than the last movie titled Mother’s Day, and that was a violent horror film.

In what will probably result in a much more amusing film than the last time the two appeared on screen together, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman are reuniting for a new comedy titled Significant Other. Bateman will direct, produce and co-star in the upcoming film with Aniston, who will also serve as executive producer. Based on the strength of Bateman’s directorial debut, Bad Words, we can at least take comfort knowing that this has to be better than The Switch, right?

What is the worst franchise in Hollywood? Transformers? Alvin and the Chipmunks? Underworld? They’re all pretty crummy, but they pale before the abject awfulness of the unnamed franchise Garry Marshall’s been working on for the last couple years, where he takes a holiday everyone loves, cast a bunch of movie stars everyone loves, and puts them in a terrible, terrible movie that everyone hates (but which make a ton of money). First came Valentine’s Day featuring Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, and Jamie Foxx, and it was bad. Then there was New Year’s Day, with Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, and Robert freaking De Niro and it was, somehow, much, much worse. Now Marshall’s reign of calendarian terror will continue with Mother’s Day.

Tina Fey’s Mean Girls was based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes, by Rosalind Wiseman. And now another one of Wiseman’s books about dealing with mean ladies is getting the big screen treatment: Queen Bee Moms And Kingpin Dads: Dealing With The Parents, Teachers, Coaches, and Counselors Who Can Make — or Break — Your Child’s Future (whew, that’s a title) is being adapted as Mean Moms, with Jennifer Aniston in a leading role.
