There are a few things the Academy loves: biopics, movies about the film industry, period dramas, films inspired by harrowing true events, Meryl Streep in all of the above, etc. Oliver Stone’s Snowden ticks off a couple of those boxes with a biopic about famous NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, himself the subject of last year’s incredible documentary Citizenfour. Originally slated to hit theaters this winter, Stone’s film has now been pushed back to 2016, ensuring its absence from next year’s Oscar ballots.

“One nation, under surveillance, with liberty and justice for all.” Damn, that’s a good tagline.

Oliver Stone’s latest project is Snowden, which tells the true story of Edward Snowden, the NSA contractor who ultimately blew the whistle on the government branch, leaking incriminating classified documents to the press which revealed the NSA’s eyebrow-raising surveillance operations. He was previously the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour, and now he’s the subject of Stone’s newest narrative film, which has revealed a new image featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the role of Snowden.

There’s no better way to turn any family get-together into a screaming match than to bring up Edward Snowden, the CIA whistleblower who revealed the extent of NSA surveillance on American citizens and became an international fugitive. You know, one man’s patriot is another man’s traitor and so on and so forth. Well, director Oliver Stone is looking to ruin a whole bunch of Christmas dinners this year with Snowden, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the most polarizing figure in modern American history.
