John Boyega Shares First Look at ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Character
BREAKING: John Boyega is sitting down. The Star Wars actor tweeted a new photo of himself in character as Jake Pentecost on the set for Pacific Rim: Uprising, and he’s got a lot on his mind. (Nod to /Film for taking notice.) Take a look at the photo below, with Boyega captioning it simply with “I am Pentecost. 2018 #PacificUprising” in reference to the film’s slated release date of February 23, 2018.

Shooting has begun on Pacific Rim: Uprising, which has been officially retitled from Pacific Rim: Maelstrom (which I liked better, but whatever guys), which means it’s time for us all to step back into the world of Jaegers and kaiju once more. The film stars John Boyega as the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) from the first movie, but Scott Eastwood is also part of the cast, and seems very excited to be in the movie.

Aside from headliner John Boyega, there aren’t any “big” names in the Pacific Rim sequel, aside from Scott Eastwood (who isn’t quite as well-known as his surname). Guillermo del Toro’s original plan for Uprising (previously titled Maelstrom) was for Charlie Day, Burn Gorman and Rinko Kikuchi to reprise their roles from the first film, but when Steven S. DeKnight took over directing duties, those plans became far less certain — and we’ve been left to wonder which characters, if any, might actually return. Thankfully, a new set photo helps clear things up a bit.

Casually tucked into an official press release to announce the hiring of three new production executives at Legendary, you will find two interesting pieces of info: First is the official title for Godzilla 2, the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 monster blockbuster, and second is the title for Pacific Rim 2 — which already had a title, but has apparently been given a much better one.

Pacific Rim: Malestrom’s title was just confirmed by John Boyega himself, and now he’s filming the mecha vs. monsters sequel in Sydney, Australia on a very post-apocalyptic-looking set. Some set photos came out today of the movie’s production, and Boyega is sporting a very cool jacket and an even cooler haircut.

The Apocalypse Is Cancelled Once More. The Apocalypse, Which Before Had Been Un-Cancelled, Has Been Re-Cancelled Again. Cancelling the Apocalypse? Not So Fast. It’s a credit to overseas audiences that Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro’s technicolor homage to classic Toho monster films and giant mecha anime, is getting a sequel. The movie did just okay stateside, but was especially well-received in China, where most of the action is set (probably on purpose). For a while, the sequel looked a little precarious, but alien kaiju from underneath the sea cannot be contained, and the sequel’s star John Boyega is very excited that as of today it’s now officially filming.

The human component of Pacific Rim 2 has slowly begun to take shape over the last few months. Following the casting of John Boyega (as the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, natch), Scott Eastwood joined the lineup and it was subsequently confirmed that Charlie Hunnam would not be returning for the sequel. And while it also seems unlikely that Rinko Kikuchi will be back to fight more Kaiju, it looks like we have a new female protagonist to fill her shoes.

Casting has already begun for Pacific Rim 2, which is set to star John Boyega as the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, with Scott Eastwood reportedly in talks to join in on the second canceling of the apocalypse. The latter piece of casting news seemed to imply that we may not see Charlie Hunnam return for the sequel, despite Guillermo del Toro’s recent assurance that a lot of actors from Pacific Rim would be back for round two. Turns out there’s only room for one generic white guy in the ongoing war between giant robots and kaiju.

Since Pacific Rim hit theaters in 2013, Guillermo del Toro has been talking about his plans for the sequel, which would include expanded roles for Charlie Day and Burn Gorman. Those plans grew to include an animated series and a comic book before Universal swooped in like Stacker Pentecost and canceled Pacific Rim 2 — well, not for long. The sequel is most definitely back on with former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight taking the director’s chair, but with del Toro out, how much of his original story plan remains?

Just yesterday Universal announced an official release date for Pacific Rim 2, which won’t arrive until — sorry! — February 2018. For now, the only actor confirmed to appear in the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi blockbuster is The Force Awakens star John Boyega, but he’s going to need a bit of help if he wants to cancel the apocalypse (again). Enter Scott Eastwood, Fury star and son of Clint, who is currently circling a role opposite Boyega in Pacific Rim 2.
