Sony’s Ambitious ‘Spider-Man’ Universe Plans Revealed
When The Amazing Spider-Man 2 went down, it took Sony’s ambitious plans for an expanded Spidey universe down with it — including projects like super-villain spinoff Sinister Six. Thanks to a deal with Marvel that allows the beloved hero (and a few of his Avengers pals) to swing between the two studios, the franchise is getting back on track. While the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming proves the value of Marvel’s involvement, it’s also emboldened Sony to start spinning yet another ambitious web. Venom and Silver and Black are just the beginning.

In news that clearly came from the farthest depths of left field, Tom Hardy has been cast as the lead in Venom, Sony’s upcoming film about the famous Spider-Man villain. That’s not all: Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will direct the movie, which is reportedly not a spinoff from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but a standalone project of sorts. Oh, and that’s still not all: Sony has shared an official announcement photo featuring Hardy in one of his classic Hardy-selfie poses, sporting a Venom t-shirt — in case you missed the point.

What ya gonna do, what ya gonna do when a movie based on the COPS TV series comes for you? No, really. What are you going to do? Are you going to pay actual money to see what is quite possibly the weirdest attempt to cash in on brand recognition? Or will you stay at home and watch reruns on TruTV or whatever? Let’s be honest: Only one of these is filmed live and on location with the men and women of law enforcement.
