There’s a few reasons the term ‘teaser trailer’ feels especially appropriate when describing the new Sofia Coppola drama The Beguiled. Not only is the average movie-lover excited for a new film from the Virgin Suicides director, the typical Colin Farrell fan hyped for the The Lobster actor to dig into more dramatic territory, or those missing Big Little Lies anxious for new Nicole Kidman; but this movie, about a boarding school quivering with insidious desires and sexual tension, looks to be the epitome of a tease.

This morning saw the official announcement of the Cannes Film Festival’s class of 2017, with the full Competition and Un Certain Regard slates announced by head honcho Thierry Frémaux in a live press conference in the wee small hours of this morning. As ever, the Competition lineup (the most prestigious program in the world’s most prestigious film festival) boasts a deep roster of cinema’s most respected auteurs, ready to pull back the curtain on some tantalizing-sounding new projects. But let’s not talk around the real news here: Adam Sandler’s going to Cannes, baby.

Sofia Coppola’s remake of The Beguiled is one of the most intriguing movies hitting theaters this year. The original, made in 1971 and starring Clint Eastwood, is based on an 1866 Southern Gothic novel by Thomas P. Cullinan. Coppola is known for her softly-toned, extremely atmospheric, dreamy filmmaking, and that style coupled with a story that’s weird as all hell is going to make for a fantastic film.

Well, would you look at that. Sofia Coppola went and made a proper genre film — transforming her signature dreamy style into something vaguely insidious in the first trailer for The Beguiled. A remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film (based on the 1966 novel of the same name), Coppola’s latest stars Colin Farrell as a wounded Union soldier who takes refuge at a southern boarding school headed by Nicole Kidman. And then things…take a turn.

Sofia Coppola’s latest project already sounds like it could be her most interesting in years, particularly for a longtime fan such as myself who found her last two efforts — Somewhere and The Bling Ring — to be entirely underwhelming (though not without some merit). The director has officially begun production on her next film, The Beguiled, a Civil War-era drama which marks her fourth feature with Kirsten Dunst, and will hit theaters next summer.

Angourie Rice is having a great year. After starring in Shane Black’s The Nice Guys opposite Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, she recently joined the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming alongside Tom Holland and Zendaya. Now, she’s got another job lined up as she has just joined the cast of The Beguiled, Sofia Coppola’s (Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides) remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood movie.

We came very close to getting a live-action update of The Little Mermaid directed by Sofia Coppola, but our dreams of being part of that world (or at least viewing it) were crushed thanks to good ol’ creative differences. It’s been three years since Coppola’s previous film, The Bling Ring, but our wait for her next project may soon be over as the director is reportedly reuniting with Kirsten Dunst for a remake of Civil War romance The Beguiled, with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning set to co-star.

We won’t have to wait long into December for Bill Murray’s upcoming Netflix Christmas special, the aptly-titled A Very Murray Christmas, but it’s never too early for holiday cheer (especially for franchise coffee). In any case, the full star-studded trailer has arrived, including Clooney, Poehler and more, but not Pope Francis, apparently.

We haven’t known what to make of Bill Murray Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas, from initial announcement to first trailer, but even in October, new details and promotion of the wandering comedian guru’s holiday hijinks crop up. On the one hand, Murray seems just as confused by Netflix as we are by him, while writer Mitch Glazer also muses the possibility of a yearly special.

Aside from the Bill Murray Christmas special coming this December to Netflix, we haven’t heard much about Sofia Coppola since 2013's The Bling Ring. She was attached to direct The Little Mermaid for Universal, but recently parted ways with the project over the typical “creative differences.” But fans of Coppola may be in for a treat, as a new report suggests that she’s reuniting with Kirsten Dunst for a new film next year.
