Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Star Wars fans were delighted with word that Rey, Jyn, Leia, Hera and more would lead a new vision of the animated universe, and there’s more good news on that double-sun horizon. See the first Forces of Destiny trailer right now, and find out the July premiere!

Star Wars Rebels gave Ahsoka Tano a slightly less ambiguous ending than her final Clone Wars appearance, but nonetheless left fans eager for explanation. Producer Dave Filoni seemed to imply we’d see her again, and now suggests Season 4 will answer that cryptic tease with even more Clone Wars returns.

Star Wars Celebration has only just begun, and won’t bring us details on The Last Jedi or Star Wars Rebels until the weekend, but fans of the animated branch are in for an early treat. The fun thing about a sci-fi franchise as big as Star Wars is how everyone wants to be in it. There are a ton of “secret” cameos in the two newest films — the most high profile of which, so far, is Daniel Craig as that Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens — but Rogue One also got its share. There are a ton of voice cameos in the movie, most of which are from members of the filmmaking crew and voice actors who usually lend their talents to the Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels animated series.

Star Wars fans taking in Rogue One this weekend may have noticed some surprising connections to the animated iterations of a galaxy far, far away, including multiple Rebels easter eggs and a notable Clone Wars connection. That connection may get much more overt, as new promo art reportedly places Saw Gerrera in line for a Star Wars Rebels appearance this season.

We’ve had plenty of time to process the demise and unfinished material of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, particularly as Star Wars Rebels filled the gap under the new Disney umbrella. That said, at least some of the late Clone Wars material was eyed for a spinoff George Lucas declined, according to Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo.

Half the fun of Star Wars Rebels lies not just in original Star Wars characters returning, but also those of spiritual predecessor The Clone Wars. So it is, that Katee Sackhoff will reprise her role as the Mandalorian Bo-Katan for Star Wars Rebels Season 3.

The animated arm of Star Wars got a major pat with news that Rogue One would feature Forest Whitaker as a character created for The Clone Wars cartoon, further brightening prospects for current series Rebels to tie in with the films. Things are looking good on that front for Season 3 as well, at least according to executive producer Simon Kinberg.

If Marvel has taught us anything, management of a shared universe between TV and film is a dicey prospect, one even Star Wars struggles to make a two-way street. That seemed to change with news that Forest Whitaker’s Rogue One character would move from animated Clone Wars beginnings to live-action, but what does supervising producer Dave Filoni have to say?
