I’m always of two minds when it comes to critics asking actors about superhero movies at film festivals. On the one hand, I understand the needs of our industry; if you don’t at ask at least one or two questions about Marvel and DC movies, another publication will, so there’s no point in pretending that any of us are above the fray. On the other hand, though, actors who have just put their all into a dramatic performance deserver better than questions about summer blockbusters that happen to be years away. Save your superhero questions for the very end and get off them as quickly as possible, that’s my motto.
The road to Suicide Squad 2 has been a bumpy one, to say the least, but DC and Warner Bros. are determined for this sequel to see the light of day. After numerous director rumors, a few director exits (most recently Jaume Collet-Serra) the film has been searching diligently for someone to take the reins. Today, they found a pretty promising choice: Gavin O‘Connor, director of The Accountant, Miracle, and Warrior.
It’s been a wild, wild week for the DCEU. First came the report on a new Joker origin story movie executive produced by Martin Scorsese and scripted by Todd Phillips, the man who puts the “Bro” in Warner Bros. But then WB topped themselves in the WTF department just one day later with news of a Joker and Harley Quinn romance film from the directors of Crazy Stupid Love. While Jared Leto won’t be participating in Scorsese’s bizarro origin film, the actor has confirmed his return for the Harley Quinn team-up, which has officially knocked Gotham City Sirens off the WB schedule (for now).
Just last month it seemed as though Jaume Collet-Serra would be joining Warner Bros.’ efforts to course-correct the DCEU following reports that the director behind Liam Neeson’s leather-clad action-dad flicks was in talks to helm Suicide Squad 2. But it looks like the sequel to David Ayer’s underwhelming DC villain ensemble is back on the market, as Collet-Serra has jumped ship in favor of taking a Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson.
