The Martian

The more we see of Ridley Scott’s The Martian, the more we wish we could see this film, like, tomorrow. Two new official photos along with two new magazine covers give us yet another look at Scott’s sci-fi drama, featuring Matt Damon as a stranded astronaut — but when the scenery looks that beautiful, maybe you don’t need to be rescued.

Every noteworthy film festival has a specific personality, honed over the years as the programmers learn all about their audience. The personality for the Toronto International Film Festival seems to be “come watch every single movie you want to see from every single filmmaker you have any interest in” because year after year, the fest can’t help but amaze with its line-up. The 2015 slate is no different, featuring the latest films from Ridley Scott, Jean-Marc Vallee, Roland Emmerich, Stephen Frears, Tom McCarthy, Cary Fukunaga, and more.

For the second time in as many years, Matt Damon will be starring in a sci-fi film as an astronaut stranded all alone on a planet. In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Damon played Dr. Mann, whose mental health went a bit wackadoo after he was left alone in space. In Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Damon plays Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on Mars and struggling to survive. To further invite comparisons, both films star Jessica Chastain. But Matt Damon would like to assure you that these films are very different.

People have been describing The Martian, the upcoming film from from Ridley Scott, as “the next Gravity.” It’s another lost-in-space adventure story with a small cast and huge life-or-death stakes. We sure have been seeing a whole lot of images from The Martian lately — Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi film starring Matt Damon has been dropping images left and right, and we still haven’t even seen a trailer yet. The latest stills from the movie feature Matt Damon (of course) and Jeff Daniels, while a new video introduces us to the crew of the Ares 3, giving us our first look at footage from the film.

Yesterday, we got our first peek at Ridley Scott’s upcoming film The Martian, featuring a very lonely Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars (hence the title, obviously). Today brings a batch of new images from the film, featuring even more shots of Damon all alone on the red planet, plus a bonus photo confirming that yes, there are other people in this movie — namely, Kristen Wiig.

Just last year, Matt Damon played an astronaut in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. And now he’s at it again, donning a space suit for Ridley Scott’s latest film. Our first look at Damon in The Martian has arrived via three new images, and unsurprisingly, he looks like an astronaut. It’s actually kind of a good look for him.
