The Trip to Spain

My most anticipated movie of the summer is The Trip to Spain, the third film in my favorite ongoing franchise on the planet. Directed by Michael Winterbottom, and starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fearlessly unflattering fictional versions of themselves, The Trip series investigates middle-aged ennui (and the key to a great Michael Caine impression) better than just about any other movie I can think of. It all started with The Trip, continued in The Trip to Italy, and now resumes with this third installment.

The calendar may have four seasons, but Hollywood’s calendar only really has two at this point: summer and awards, and summer seems to last longer and longer ever year. Though the start of May has long been the unofficial kickoff of the S.M.S., 2017 has already seen a King Kong movie, a ghost in a shell, and the fate of Fast & Furious franchise. The change from April to May is something of a formality in 2017. Once the Oscars are over, the summer begins.

The only thing better than watching people eat delicious food in gorgeous locations – besides actually eating it yourself – is watching two comedians do it. Michael Winterbottom launched what would become a beloved trilogy back in 2010 with The Trip, which began as a BBC Television miniseries with episodes edited into a feature-length versions. The first film found comedian-actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon traveling across Yorkshire devouring scrumptious meals and showing off their best celebrity impressions. After reuniting for a second course in The Trip to Italy in 2014, the two are back for a third excursion in The Trip to Spain, a delight that adds some introspective notes to the series.

Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan’s The Trip franchise is quite possibly the most pure and fun series of films out there. Sure, you’ve got your Avengers and your X-Men and your Dom Torettos, but sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and enjoy two hilarious actors go on road trips across Europe together. We’ve been with them through England, Italy, and now they’re off to gorge themselves on pasta primavera in Spain, and we’ve got your first look at the road ahead.
