Awards season may be underway with the official start of the Toronto Film Festival, but the fall of 2016 picks up right where summer left off with Antoine Fuqua’s ‘The Magnificent Seven,’ a loud and frenetic update of an old classic very few people were clamoring for. The question with any remake is why; why a new version and why one now? The movie just made its world premiere as the opening night film of TIFF 2016, and I still don’t have a satisfying answer to that question.

It’s been a bit lively in Spider-Man-land over the past week, as new rumors have surfaced regarding some of the characters and costumes we might see in the web-slinger’s reboot. The latest report suggests that the villainous Tinkerer will be joining Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and although Sony already has Robert Downey Jr. on loan, there’s another Marvel star tossing his sizable hat into the ring.

It’s taken far longer than a trip over the rainbow to finally get NBC Wizard of Oz reboot Emerald City clicking its heels, but even without a formal premiere date, the first official photos of the Tarsem Singh-directed series have arrived. When all you care about is money, bad things happen. That’s the message of Jurassic World, where greedy theme-park executives hoping to spike attendance engineer the “Indominus Rex,” a genetically-modified dinosaur that immediately turns on its creators and runs amok. Designed as a cautionary tale about the dangers of building a meaner, badder monster purely for the sake of profits, Jurassic World works equally well as a cautionary tale about doing the same thing in movies. All of the rationalizations provided by Jurassic World’s employees — “Consumers want them bigger, louder, more teeth.” “Somebody’s gotta make sure this company has a future!” — could have been taken directly out of the mouths of the studio executives who approved this gene splice of a reboot and a sequel. Their creation — the Indominus or the movie, there’s basically no difference — is as advertised; huge, mean, and visually striking. But this experiment is not without consequences.

Vincent D’Onofrio is now officially a career movie and television villain to the point where, even if the big twist in a movie revealed D’Onofrio as the bad guy, we’d all roll our eyes and say, “Well, obviously.” The actor will now use his particular set of skills to take on the role of lead villain in Dax Shepard’s upcoming big screen version of classic cop series CHiPs.

Marvel’s Netflix Daredevil will hit the streets in a matter of hours, and dams are already breaking now that the famous red suit has been revealed to the public.
