It’s December; time to start putting a bow on the year in cinema. Over the next days and weeks here at ScreenCrush, we’ll be ranking the best and worst of 2015, and we’re kicking things off right here, with our list of the best movie posters of the year.

In the gallery above you’ll see our picks for the 25 best movie posters of 2015. Determining the criteria for the selection of these posters was a matter of some debate. Judging a poster’s excellence means weighing both aesthetic and commercial factors. Is the poster attractive? Does it make you want to see the film it’s promoting? Could it stand on its own as a work of design?

The only significant qualification: the poster had to be released sometime during this calendar year. So great posters for 2015 movies that were unveiled in 2014 (like this sharp In the Heart of the Sea image) didn’t count. And yes, that does mean there are posters on this list for movies that still haven’t come out yet and could be disasters. But for the purposes of this list, all that matters was if the poster looks good and makes you want to see that disaster. (Oh, and if you want to see the absolute worst poster of 2015, that’s right here. But you don’t want to see it. Trust me, you really don’t. And it’s also super NSFW.)

What were your favorite movie posters of 2015? Let us know in the comments below (as long as your pick’s not The Human Centipede Part 3). ScreenCrush’s Best of 2015 roundup will continue tomorrow.
