Watch Neil Patrick Harris, Anna Kendrick and Jack Black in the 2015 Oscars Opening Monologue
For his 2015 Oscars monologue, host Neil Patrick Harris eschewed a traditional jokes routine, and instead went with a big musical number that brought on stage some special guests including Anna Kendrick, Jack Black and some dancing stormtroopers.
Though he had a few solid laughs (“We're here to celebrate Hollywood’s best and whitest — I mean, best and brightest...”), Harris’ monologue was much more Broadway and much less Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes. And, it was really very good! Unlike Seth MacFarlane, Harris’ song and dance wasn't mean-spirited in any way, but still completely entertaining and funny.
Like previous Oscar musical numbers, Harris was inserted into multiple classic films like The Avengers, Star Wars, Goonies and Risky Business, while also performing with Anna Kendrick (who joked about Harris’ fate at the end of Gone Girl) and Jack Black, who pulled and Kanye and stormed with the stage.
There were also a lot of dancing stormtroopers, which was a little weird.
