‘Mad Max’ Director George Miller Wants to Make a Smaller Movie Next, Not ‘Man of Steel 2’

About a month ago a rumor was circulating that Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller was in talks to helm Man of Steel 2. Then came the rumors that the sequel was placed on indefinite hold (or not?), but that Miller was still in talks with WB to take on another DC superhero project. Miller himself has finally responded to those rumors and gives us a hint about what he’s planning to do next.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Miller says he wants his next movie to be something smaller, which means he may not be making Fury Road sequel The Wasteland anytime soon:

I hope the next film I make is a very, very small film without any special effects and not many stunts.

Miller was previously developing a Justice League movie for Warner Bros., but that project fell apart back in 2009. He’s remained interested in directing a superhero film, and has recently been rumored for the Justice League Dark movie Guillermo del Toro exited. Miller goes on to express his interest in superhero mythology while refuting the rumor that he was in talks to direct Man of Steel 2:

There’s been some of that [talk about Man of Steel 2] in the mix, but it’s, I’d say, probably not true. I was going to do a Justice League movie that fell through in 2009, not a fault of anybody’s but a new Australian government, which wasn’t agile enough with the rebates. They were indecisive, and there was a writer’s strike, and the planets didn’t align for that one. But i’ve always been interested — basically I work in mythology and the superhero movies are basically new incarnations of the Greek and Roman mythologies, so it’s always something I’m interested in.

Miller’s mythological comparison echoes Zack Snyder’s ongoing reiterations about the mythology in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so perhaps the two directors have had some discussions about WB’s superhero plans — but they’re just discussions, for now.
