It's not that easy to get your foot in the door when you're not an established director, but 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' co-creator and star Rob McElhenney walked into Legendary with an impressive pitch and a four-minute test reel for an epic family action film called 'Figment' -- how impressive? He closed a seven-figure deal to make his feature writing and directing debut. Okay, we're interested.

Deadline reports that McElhenney will make his big screen directorial debut with 'Figment,' a family-friendly action film about a wildly creative little boy and his family, who are plunged into peril when each of their deepest fears suddenly spring to life. Prior to splitting from Warner Bros., Legendary's most recent output included 'Man of Steel,' 'Pacific Rim,' and 'Godzilla.' Their upcoming slate includes major features like 'Interstellar,' 'Fast and Furious 7,' 'Jurassic World,' and Guillermo del Toro's 'Crimson Peak.'

McElhenney's 'Figment' is said to be in keeping with the epic scope and vision of Legendary's bigger films, and the tone is comparable to classic family movies like 'E.T.' -- definitely the kind of stuff you'd like to see more of when it comes to family fare. To land such a rare deal, McElhenney showed off a four-minute test reel and delivered a 20-minute pitch for the project. Perhaps we'll get to see that test reel on an eventual Blu-ray release.
