The first trailer for Mario Kart 8 is chock full of all the hallmarks of the franchise, but packs in a few new twists to that familiar formula, too.

Coming next spring, Mario Kart 8 will be the first entry for the series on the Wii U, which gives Nintendo some need horsepower in turning out improved graphics and physics. That means even crazier courses and vehicles, like the multi-path tracks and hovercars on display in this first footage.

All the old friends are here once again, too, but we wouldn't be surprised to see some new faces announced closer to the release of the actual game. Locales looked great, and there's sure to be a lot of good times (and ruined friendships) ahead for Mario Kart 8.
