Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter turned a few heads when they announced the casting of Olivia Munn in Shane Black’s upcoming The Predator and slipped in a quick tease about the script. According to their sources, the newest Predator movie would take place in suburbia, leading many people speculate on how this setting would sync up with earlier reports that Black wanted to make a movie that was both very scary and very funny. After all, the suburbs have given birth to countless horror and science-fiction films; in the hands of someone like Shane Black, they could be the perfect setting for the Predator franchise.

There’s only one problem with that: none of it was true. Black himself reached out to Collider (via Heroic Hollywood) to shoot down to the rumor, noting that the film most certainly does not take place in the suburbs. That means we’re back to knowing very little about Black’s much-anticipated return to the Predator franchise, other than the fact that we’ll definitely want to see it on its opening weekend.

As a reminder, Black had previously talked to Collider about the type of movie he wanted to make and how it would differ from previous entries in the franchise. You can read our entire write-up of his comments here, but here is the one that jumps out the most:

I think it’ll be interesting to get a group of credible guys — the hallmark of the first one is you have guys together that are kinda funny and self-referential and also very tough. I don’t know that we’re going to deviate over much from that, but there are at least a couple of factors that we’ve deliberately chosen to make it not just that group of buff, tough guys.

The Predator is set to start filming in February 2017 with an estimated February 9, 2018 release date.
