Some movies are worth seeing just to watch two immensely talented actors emote the hell out of each other. Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn’s upcoming Una fits that bill to a T. It hit the festival circuit around this time last year but hasn’t gotten a release until now, and the buzz around its two stars has us intrigued.

Una is based on the Tony Award-winning play Blackbird by David Harrower, and focuses on two people whose lives become twined together yet again after disaster befell them years in the past. Una is still haunted by Ray, the man she ran away with when she was young, and once the two meet again, their volatile past is in danger of bubbling to the surface.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

“Una” follows a young woman’s journey to reclaim her past. Fifteen years earlier, Una ran away with an older man, Ray, a crime for which he was arrested and imprisoned. When she comes across a photo of him in a trade magazine, Una tracks him down and turns up at his workplace. Her abrupt arrival threatens to destroy Ray’s new life and derail her stability. Unspoken secrets and buried memories surface as Una and Ray sift through the wreckage of their past.

Una also stars Riz Ahmed, and opens in New York October 6, and in Los Angeles October 13.
