Let’s brainstorm for a moment. A year ago, I tell you that Sony Pictures is giving $100 million dollars to the screenwriter of Pan and the director of Mama to make a blockbuster summer movie. Furthermore, this $100 million dollar movie will be based on a popular animated television series from the 1980s. What is your gut reaction? Are you surprised? Dismayed? Cautiously optimistic? Now what if I tell you the exact same thing, but instead of Pan and Mama, I mention Wonder Woman and It, two of the most critically and commercial successful movies of 2017? Just goes to show you how much things can change in Hollywood over just a few months.

Audiences have grown accustomed to seeing a slew of screenwriter credits on summer blockbusters. A few studios, like Universal and Paramount, have put together writers’ rooms for their biggest franchises; some films also have a host of different writers who either worked to develop the story or hammered out the final screenplay itself. Therefore, fans probably won’t bat an eye when they see three different writers’ names pop up in the Wonder Woman opening credits, but to hear one of the film’s producers tell it, that’s only part of the story. The road to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen involved a whole host of writers who didn’t end up mentioned in the final product.

DC likes to keep it in the family, it would seem. The Wrap reports that Jason Fuchs, the pen behind the script for 2017’s planned Wonder Woman solo film, has now signed on to write the impending vehicle for DC’s extraterrestrial hellraiser Lobo. Though the man’s track record isn’t exactly spotless, having most recently been responsible for whatever the hell Pan thought it was doing, DC has faith that he won’t royally Fuchs this one up as well and has entrusted him with what could be another major franchise.

There’s some maybe not-so-great news here to report: the ‘Wonder Woman’ film is reportedly in negotiations with a screenwriter following the hiring of director Michelle MacLaren. And although we had our fingers crossed that WB would also hire a woman to script the film, their screenwriter of choice is Jason Fuchs, who is, as you may have guessed, a dude. He’s also responsible for the screenplay for the upcoming ‘Pan’ movie, which doesn’t seem very promising. But there’s still hope! Don’t feel too bad yet!
