Amazon wasn’t messing around when they said they wanted their own Game of Thrones. Not only is the streaming service working on a Lord of the Rings offshoot, but Game of Thrones’ own battle specialist Miguel Sapochnik is working on a new TV adaptation of Conan the Barbarian.

Well, the dragon’s out of the bag now. After Game of Thrones let slip that fan-favorite director Miguel Sapochnik might return for the final season, HBO has stepped up to confirm his and another revered helmer taking on Season 8. Plus – who’s directing the series finale?

The shortened run of Game of Thrones Season 7 still managed several standout hours, but nonetheless lacked some visual flair from seasons past. That may change for the eighth and final run, as fan-favorite “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards” director Miguel Sapochnik may make a long-awaited return.

Even as they seem to do it every year, it’s hard to imagine Game of Thrones topping this past season’s “Battle of the Bastards” for memorable action sequences. At the very least, revisit the scene from every angle, as a new Blu-ray featurette shows Kit Harington filming that famous one-shot.

Out of all sixty Game of Thrones episodes there are a few that stand out from the crowd as some of the best TV has to offer. “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter” are two of these, and were both directed by the show’s current golden boy, Miguel Sapochnik. It looks like Hollywood is now trawling the realm of TV for promising new directors, and it was just announced yesterday that Sapochnik is working on a feature film based on the legendary hero Sinbad.
