25 years ago this week, animated television was forever changed. That may sound hyperbolic, but when Nickelodeon debuted the network’s first block of original programming in the summer of 1991, it was one of the most game-changing things animated television had ever seen.

Rugrats was one of the most iconic animated shows of the ’90s. The second ever Nicktoon, the cartoon debuted on Nickelodeon 25 years ago this week. Yup, the Rugrats are officially a quarter of a century old.

Last year Nickelodeon announced plans to revive several of our favorite ’90s shows, starting with a special block of programming called “The Splat.” But that’s not all the network has been cooking up for nostalgic fans — they’ve also been developing a new film that will bring many of our favorite ’90s cartoon characters together on the big screen for one big, animated adventure, and the company has found the right creative team to tackle the ambitious project.
