Joaquin Phoenix Hammers Some Bad Dudes in New ‘You Were Never Really Here’ Trailer
Judging by the new trailer for Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, you really do not want to find out what “hammer time” means for Joaquin Phoenix. But we’re going to find out anyway when the new thriller hits theaters early next April — or now, if you watch the trailer, which teases a heavy flick in which Phoenix does his best Oldboy impression, playing a “fixer” who hunts down the evil men who kidnap young girls.
In what could be the strangest big screen adaptation of To Catch a Predator, by way of Park Chan-wook, You Were Never Really Here casts a heavily-bearded Phoenix as a traumatized veteran who uses his particular set of skills — and a hammer — to bash the bejesus out of men who kidnap young girls. It’s a terrible, but respectable career path, and someone’s gotta do it? I guess?
Ramsay’s latest directing effort is long overdue; she was originally hired to helm Jane Got a Gun before “creative differences” led to her exit from the project. You Were Never Really Here is Ramsay’s first film since We Need to Talk About Kevin, and it took home Best Actor and Best Screenplay at Cannes earlier this year — making it high on our must-see list for 2018. Here’s the official synopsis:
A traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe’s nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.
Based on the novel by Jonathan Ames, You Were Never Really Here hits theaters on April 6, 2018.
