Earlier this month, we told you that 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' had cast Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson. Today we get confirmation on Woodley's involvement plus some more information on her role.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Woodley has signed on to 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' but notes that her involvement in the sequel will be "very small"...at least in the first sequel. Woodley and Mary Jane are an "integral" part of the studio's plans for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3' however for reasons that should be clear to most Spidey fans. For the uninitiated, spoilers lie ahead.

'Amazing Spider-Man 2' will follow the classic "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" storyline from the early 1970s. In the story, the Green Goblin kidnaps Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and throws her off the top of the Brooklyn Bridge. Spider-Man is too late to save her (and the editors later revealed it was his attempts to save her using his webbing, snapped her neck and is what actually killed his love).

Stone has previously said she supports the "Death of Gwen Stacy" and wants to stay true to the comics. With Gwen's death in 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' it paves the way for an expanded role for Mary Jane in 'Amazing Spider-Man 3.'

With Woodley cast, producers are now looking to find their villains for the film, widely rumored to be Electro and the aforementioned Green Goblin.
