What the heck is 'Earth to Echo'? We haven't heard a single peep about this science-fiction family adventure until the teaser trailer arrived today and after watching it, we're still not sure what to think. All we know is that it's a found-footage take on the typical "kids make an amazing discovery and have an adventure" subgenre.

Despite the found-footage format, the film's focus on young protagonists and its synthetic, '80s-tastic soundtrack make this feel very much a product of a different time, like something Steven Spielberg would have produced 30 years ago through his Amblin production company. What we do see here looks like 'Chronicle' and 'Super 8' got crammed together into a mysterious new package. The only reason we're not more intrigued is that 'Earth to Echo' seems to have literally come out of nowhere, so we're still suspicious of what it actually is.

The official synopsis, which doesn't offer very many additional clues, reads as follows:

After a construction project begins digging in their neighborhood, best friends Tuck, Munch and Alex inexplicably begin to receive strange, encoded messages on their cell phones. Convinced something bigger is going on, they go to their parents and the authorities. When everyone around them refuses to take the messages seriously, the three embark on a secret adventure to crack the code and follow it to its source. But taking matters into their own hands gets the trio in way over their heads when they discover a mysterious being from another world who desperately needs their help. The epic, suspenseful and exciting journey that follows will change all of their lives forever.

'Earth to Echo' inexplicably opens on April 25, 2014.
