Ever since the Harry Potter franchise split up the final story into two films with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2, it’s become customary to divide the last part of a YA franchise into two movies — The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, for instance, or Twilight: Breaking Dawn. Divergent is following that path with Allegiant, based on Veronica Roth’s last book in the series, but instead of releasing the films as Allegiant Part 1 and Allegiant Part 2 as previously planned, the two films have now been renamed.

It’s a slightly smart move on the part of Lionsgate, to give audiences the subtle impression that they’re not waiting a year to basically watch the other half of a sequel. It’s not as if the final film has been chopped in two anyway — we are getting two films, not one. So instead of the previously titled The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1 and The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 2, we’re getting The Divergent Series: Allegiant and The Divergent Series: Ascendant.

The two films also have new posters, as reported and revealed over at MTV:
