The Lonely Island’s Making a Movie With Judd Apatow

Here’s a three word pitch that totally sells me.

“Lonely Island Movie.”

Boom. Done. Here’s my $15. Now put it in my eyeballs.

I know the default mode of all movie bloggery is skepticism, cynicism, and snark. But I read the news from The Hollywood Reporter that the men of The Lonely Island — Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone — are in production on a “musical comedy” and all I feel is joy and excitement, like a man who’s on a boat, or a different man enjoying a lazy Sunday, or a third person who just cut a hole in a box for the express purpose of then stuffing his junk in that box.

The film, which Schaffer and Taccone are co-directing, doesn’t have a title at this point, but it does have a plot synopsis:

The project takes aim on the fluffy music documentaries of recent years such as Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and Katy Perry’s Part of Me. It centers on a rapper whose latest album bombs and he must do the unthinkable: a reunion concert with his former boy band.

And it gets better: Judd Apatow is producing the film, adding yet another distinctive comic voice to an already stacked group of creators. It sounds like a great premise for a movie (even if, uh, I didn’t actually hate Never Say Never. Please don’t judge me too harshly.) and the prospect of a new batch of Lonely Island songs to go with it just sounds incredible. Or incredibad, in this case. Shooting began on the film yesterday.
