Ever since our first glimpse last week at Elijah Wood in Franck Khalfoun's remake of 'Maniac' we've been waiting impatiently for a trailer -- and here it is, fresh from Cannes.

First Showing has the trailer, which apparently had some syncing issues with the audio that caused them to lose a few seconds when they attempted to fix it.

It's incredibly NSFW stuff, featuring a little nudity and a ton of bloody violence. More importantly, any fears about the film losing the grittier qualities of the original are instantly quelled by this impressive trailer. 'Maniac' looks fantastically dark, discomforting, and squirm-inducing.

Wood plays serial killer Frank, a psycho who collects the scalps of beautiful women for his mannequin collection. It's a much darker side of the talented actor and one we can't wait to see more of in the coming months. Unfortunately, 'Maniac' isn't set for release until 2013.

The official synopsis:

Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.
