The latest trailer for mother! is arguably more effective than the first — hard to imagine after that initial and completely bonkers sneak peek, I know. But this one uses sound and dialogue to unnerving effect, and although doing more telling than showing seems counterintuitive, it’s a concept that works brilliantly in the second trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s new film, and his first since 2014’s Noah.

The new trailer features footage of Jennifer Lawrence wandering around the home she shares with Javier Bardem’s character, ultimately making her way to the front of the house and opening the door. That’s fairly simple. The unsettling part is that it seems like they’ve laid the sound track from the first trailer over this one, so as we watch Lawrence traipse through the house, we hear things like screaming and Michelle Pfeiffer’s threatening dialogue and Bardem’s shouting — it’s all very intense. And right before it ends, we get a few quick shots of additional footage.

It’s totally understandable if you want to go into mother! knowing (and maybe seeing) as little as possible. The vague plot description from Paramount is quite helpful in that regard:

A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream), mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in this riveting psychological thriller about love, devotion and sacrifice.

And if you’re worried that the first trailer was a little too revealing, I have it on good authority that nothing is quite (or even remotely) as it seems in the marketing for mother! — considering this is from the same filmmaker who gave us Black Swan, that’s not much of a surprise. His new film, on the other hand, may prove otherwise.

mother! hits theaters on September 15.
