After six long years, our national nightmare is over. The sequel to ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ has finally arrived. In the stunningly titled ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,’ Kevin James reprises his role as the portly rent-a-cop with a bad habit of stumbling into dangerous situations that are beyond his meager pay grade. This time, he fights thieves while attending a security conference in Las Vegas, as you are wont to do when you visit Las Vegas in a comedy sequel.

Anyone who has seen/suffered through the original film knows what to expect here. James says a lot of dumb things, does a lot of dumber things, and gets into a lot of bizarre scuffles. If the ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2’ trailer is anything to go by, unexpected punching and kicking is the highest form of comedy, with the title characters throwing down with all kinds of people and beasts. In two and a half minutes, he combats armed crooks, a bird, a horse, and an old woman. Who knows what surprises lurk in the full film?!

To his credit, James never seems to phone in his work, even in the most dire projects. No one in cinematic history have managed to create so many variations on the “fat guy falls down” jokes. He’s an inspired performer in his, you know, own special kind of way. There’s something inherently appealing about him, even if that appeal is always squandered in movies that look like parodies of bad movies featured in good movies. There are stretches of the ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2’ trailer that look like they belong in ‘Tropic Thunder’ or something.

But maybe we’re wrong? After all, the first film was a big hit and as you know, the American public are never wrong about anything. Ever. Anyway, here’s the official synopsis:

In this sequel, in which Kevin James reprises the role of Paul Blart, the security guard is headed to Las Vegas to attend a Security Guard Expo with his teenage daughter Maya (Raini Rodriguez) before she departs for college. While at the convention, he inadvertently discovers a heist – and it’s up to Blart to apprehend the criminals.

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2’ opens on April 17, 2015.
