Watch This Supercut of All Available ‘Rogue One’ Footage
It seems like the only time that people talk about trailers is to complain about them in some fashion. They gave away too much, they gave away too little, they didn’t feature the right colors or characters or soundtrack. It’s tough to cut an enticing movie trailer in 2016, not least of all because of our culture’s increasing hand-wringing about what constitutes a spoiler. A good trailer — one that gives you just enough without giving you everything — should be celebrated as its own miniature art form.
There are also movie fans who simply want as much footage as they can get their hands on, and that’s fine too! This one is actually dedicated to you: on Friday, Gamespot (via Gizmodo) uploaded a four minute long supercut of all the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story footage we’ve seen to date, painstakingly laid out in their approximation of chronological order.
While the end result is a little choppy — especially with regards to musical cues — there are a few things we can glean from seeing the footage arranged like this. The big one is that there is something a little worrisome about the number of set pieces in play. We see the Rogue One squadron skirmishing with the Empire on a desert planet, a volcano planet, in space, and on a jungle planet, all while bouncing between the Rebel’s hideout on Yavin IV and the Imperial fleet. Most trailers have focused on one or two of these sequences, but seeing all three together makes one wonder if there’s enough story for all this action.
We’ll have to wait until December to find out whether Rogue One ends up being a bit too cluttered for its own good or just the right blend of action and science-fiction. One thing is for certain, though: this much information in one trailer actually raises more questions than it answers. I’ll stick to my 90 second teasers, thank you very much.
Rogue One will hit theaters on December 16, 2016.
