‘Sicario 2: Soldado’ Trailer: Del Toro and Brolin Go to War
Sicario was a bleak and deeply cynical window into the war on drugs. It was about death, murder, rage, and an act of truly disturbing revenge.
I smell sequel!!
Someone did, anyway, because here is Sicario 2: Soldado. Both Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin return for the film, along with Taylor Sheridan, whose screenplay for the first film made him a major Hollywood player. (Director Denis Villeneuve did not join them; he’s been replaced by Stefano Sollima.) Here’s the plot synopsis, via Entertainment Weekly:
Sicario taught us that Alejandro is a man out for revenge against the people who killed his family. Now he’s thrown into a new assignment involving Isabelle (Isabella Moner), the daughter of a drug lord, and he reaches a moral crossroads. The gloves may be off, but he’s at a point where he now ‘either has to follow orders or make the right decision,’ Del Toro says, ‘and so that’s kind of where the character’s stuck.’
How is Soldado different than Sicario? “I think the characters are faced with more decisions, more forks in the road,” Del Toro told EW. Another key difference: No Emily Blunt this time around. Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan felt like her story was finished at the end of the last movie. But he had more to say about Del Toro’s Alejandro and Josh Brolin’s Matt Graver. And so here we are. Sicario 2: Soldado opens in theaters on June 29, 2018.
