Nintendo and Sega announced a new exclusive partnership during Friday's Nintendo Direct event, which, among other things, will see the upcoming Sonic: Lost Word game released exclusively on the Wii U and 3DS later this year.

Sonic: Lost Worlds will be a new 3D action-adventure platformer starring Sega's iconic mascot. Few other details were offered, but Nintendo president Satoru Iwata did add more info would be coming during E3 2013.

“The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “These announcements in conjunction with SEGA demonstrate the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform, and set the stage for our upcoming announcements at E3.”

The deal isn't exactly Earth-shattering, as Sonic has meant less and less over the years, but bodes well for Nintendo. The company can use all the exclusives it can get to support the struggling Wii U.
