Following yesterday’s debut of the first two images from the new Tomb Raider movie comes another sneak peek at Alicia Vikander as iconic video game hero Lara Croft — and yep, she definitely looks like she’s gonna do some tomb-raiding. Warner Bros. has also revealed the first (very) full official synopsis for the film, which hits theaters next March. They’re really getting a jump on this thing, huh?

As far as most audiences were concerned, Assassin’s Creed didn’t exactly build a strong case for continuing to make movies based on video games (I’m in the minority on that one), a pursuit that has proven consistently disappointing over the last few decades despite occasional box-office success. But maybe things will finally change with the release of Tomb Raider, in which Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander takes on the iconic role of video game hero Lara Croft. She certainly looks the part in the first photos from the film, which hits theaters next year.

Alicia Vikander has quickly become one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood after breaking out with Ex Machina and stealing the show in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Danish Girl. She’s currently filming Tomb Raider as the new Lara Croft, and is now in negotiations to star in Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire follow-up, Freakshift.

A movie reboot of Tomb Raider initially sounded like a fairly lame idea, but it’s become increasingly intriguing (and somewhat promising) in recent months — in addition to casting Alicia Vikander in the lead role, the new Tomb Raider film has some good things going for it, including a solid director (the guy behind The Wave), Walton Goggins as the villain and Dominic West as Lara Croft’s dad. Today adds an extra dose of optimism with a series of photos from the set, which offer our first look at Vikander in costume as the iconic video game hero.

If you had any doubt about the necessity, validity, integrity or any other –ity of the new Tomb Raider movie, this bit of casting news should immediately mitigate any and all of your concerns. Walton Friggin’ Goggins has joined the cast of the upcoming reboot, in which he’ll play — oh come on, like we need to even tell you — the film’s villain. And with that piece of casting, Tomb Raider was just elevated from “Yeah, sure, I guess I’ll see this movie at some point” to “Can I pre-order my tickets now or nah?”

Of the many reboots in the works, the new Tomb Raider movie is one of the more interesting projects currently in development — and one of the few with some actual potential. Starring Ex Machina’s Alicia Vikander and directed by The Wave’s Roar Uthaug (who has the coolest name ever), Tomb Raider seems like the rare reboot that might actually be a good idea. And we won’t have to wait too long to find out if that’s the case, as Warner Bros. has officially set a release date.

The new Tomb Raider might be making her way into Hollywood blockbusters, especially with the upcoming Jason Bourne, but Alicia Vikander is still intent on using her acting skills to make you weep. If you thought she was done sweeping up awards last year, the woman-who-never-stops-making-movies has another likely awards season contender this fall in ‘The Light Between Oceans,’ and you may want to get some tissues for it.

The Weinstein Company sure did pick a clever time to release the trailer for Tulip Fever, capitalizing on today’s news of Alicia Vikander’s casting as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot. The Oscar-winning actress stars in the studio’s seductive new period drama opposite Christoph Waltz and Dane DeHaan, and judging by the trailer, it looks like she’s playing a 17th century Dutch version of F—, Marry, Kill.
