Godzilla 2

We don’t know what Gareth Edwards is plotting after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters, but we do know that he won’t be returning to helm Godzilla 2. The upcoming sequel to his 2014 monster movie has picked up a pair of interesting writers, however, with Krampus duo Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields on board to pen the screenplay — but don’t expect to see the giant lizard battling it out with a demonic jack-in-the-box (unless…).

When Legendary’s latest version of Godzilla opened to big box office back in 2014, the studio was quick to move ahead on a sequel with the first film’s director, Gareth Edwards, back to direct the film. But then progress stalled. Legendary announced that they were making a King Kong film, Kong: Skull Island, and that Kong and Godzilla would clash in Godzilla Vs. Kong, provided that neither Godzilla nor Kong’s mom is named Martha. Godzilla 2 was bumped back to 2019, a long time between installments in the sequel-minded world of modern Hollywood. I mean I know Godzilla is really big and moves slow, but this is really slow.

We learned a lot from this year's Comic-Con about Legendary's plans for some epic monster movie action in the future, from the announcement of a 'King Kong' prequel with 'Skull Island' and the confirmation of 'Godzilla 2.' Max Borenstein has quickly become the studio's go-to writer for their tentpole projects, and the man who penned the first 'Godzilla' will now return to script the sequel.

'Godzilla 2' was announced almost immediately after the film opened earlier this summer. But, with director Gareth Edwards off directing one of the upcoming 'Star Wars' spinoffs, when would a 'Godzilla 2' even happen? Well, now we know the answer...

Perhaps this time we will let "our hero" Godzilla get some actual rest before dispatching him to battle the world's other major MUTOs? Is that too much to ask? We've known for months that Legendary is eager to stay in the 'Godzilla' business after the success of this summer's awesome Gareth Edwards' feature film -- after all, they did announce a sequel to the film within days of it hitting the big screen -- but there have been plenty of lingering questions as to when that would happen and who (or what) we could expect to see in the next feature.

In a move that surprised no one after the weekend box office report, 'Godzilla 2' is already in the works and we couldn't be more excited. Director Gareth Edwards' take on the iconic monster is one of the most beautiful and refreshing summer movies in a long time, bending over backwards to build tension and tease the the audience before unleashing a monster mash of a climax that has to be seen to
