Jack Reacher 2

I reviewed the original Jack Reacher for ScreenCrush back in 2012, and I started that review with this sentence: “If he hadn't already used that title for another movie, Tom Cruise could have easily called Jack Reacher “The Last Samurai.” Which made me chuckle when I reread it this morning. Who directed the new Jack Reacher sequel, Never Go Back? Edward Zwick. And what film did Zwick previously make with Tom Cruise? The Last Samurai.

Christopher McQuarrie didn’t return to write and direct Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, but at least it’s because he’s working with Tom Cruise on a different sequel (Mission: Impossible 6). Still, a new Jack Reacher movie is something we can all look forward to, and the first photos from Never Go Back have arrived to get us properly pumped.

This fall production begins on not one, but two highly anticipated action film sequels (both titled after their protagonists): Jack Reacher 2 and John Wick 2. Today brings an update on the former, as director Ed Zwick has formally begun production on Jack Reacher 2, adding a couple of new cast members and giving the sequel an official title.

It’s going to be pretty hard to top the delightful, evil antics of filmmaker Werner Herzog, whose turn as the villain in Jack Reacher was absolutely wonderful, to say the least. And maybe Jack Reacher 2 director Ed Zwick is well-aware of the impossibility of topping Herzog — instead of trying to one-up the first film, Zwick has turned his attention to the small screen in selecting Tom Cruise’s foil for the upcoming sequel.

Jack Reacher 2 is going to be a bit of a family affair when it heads into production this November. Based on Lee Childs’ novel Never Go Back, the highly anticipated sequel is giving the eponymous hero a daughter (kind of) who just happens to already be a hero of sorts. Heroes Reborn star Danika Yarosh has joined Jack Reacher 2 in the role of Tom Cruise’s daughter.

The past few years have been kind to anyone who likes watching Tom Cruise movies. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was everything we want out of that series, Edge of Tomorrow was one of the most fun genre movies in ages, and Jack Reacher was the best movie that you spent countless hours trying to convince your friends to watch despite its dull title. We knew that a Jack Reacher 2 was on the way, but since we apparently live in a slightly better universe than previously thought, we now know when it will hit theaters.

2012’s Jack Reacher was only a modest success at the box office, but it had a card hidden up its sleeve – it was actually a really good movie that people watched after its theatrical run and really liked. So Jack Reacher 2 is coming and for fans of stripped-down, adult-oriented thrillers who never get tired of watching Tom Cruise crash stunt cars for our amusement, that’s excellent news. It’s also excellent news for fans of Cobie Smulders, who has supposedly joined the cast.

Back in May, we learned the glorious news that Tom Cruise is returning for Jack Reacher 2, re-teaming with The Last Samurai director Ed Zwick for the action sequel. Things have been quiet since then, but a new report reveals that Cruise and Zwick will begin filming the sequel sooner than you may have assumed.

Rejoice, Tom Cruise fans and dads everywhere! Jack Reacher, Cruise’s exceedingly satisfying adaptation of Lee Child’s popular literary hero, is getting a sequel.
