For a movie that hasn’t even begun production yet, we certainly seem to know a lot about Josh Boone’s The New Mutants. We know that Boone has pitched The New Mutants as an X-Men take on a “full-fledged horror movie.” We know that James McAvoy will probably appear as Charles Xavier at some point. We know that the Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy, two of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood, have joined on to play Wolfsbane and Magik, respectively. And now we know who will be playing Cannonball, a fan favorite from the original series.

Just this morning we learned some interesting new details about New Mutants, the upcoming X-Men spinoff from The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone, who describes the project as a “full-fledged horror movie.” If you’re anything like us, then that bit of intel made you anxious to hear more about the latest film in Fox’s Marvel-ous mutant universe — looks like we didn’t have to wait long for another update, as the studio is reportedly eyeing two more actors to join the lineup.

After more than a year of rumors, hints and reports, Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams have officially joined the cast of New Mutants, one of a few upcoming projects set within the X-Men universe. The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone has long been attached to helm the project, teasing the Game of Thrones star’s potential involvement as recently as February. It’s another big step forward for New Mutants, which joins X-Force and Channing Tatum’s on again / off again Gambit movie in Fox’s lineup of forthcoming mutant spinoffs.

Rumors have swirled around the gestating production of New Mutants like so many Terrigen Mists since it was first announced around a year ago. We‘ve pinned down The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone as the hand on the steering wheel, he’s confirmed that The Witch starlet Anya Taylor-Joy will take one of the leading roles as Magik, and she’s confirmed that James McAvoy will reprise his role of the young Professor Charles Xavier. But even as the production’s projected spring start date rapidly approaches, little else is known for sure about this lower-profile superhero picture.

Anya Taylor-Joy has long been rumored for a role in Josh Boone’s New Mutants, one of Fox’s intriguing new additions to the X-Men franchise. Although Taylor-Joy — like rumored co-star Maisie Williams — can’t say with 100 percent certainty that she’s actually going to be in the movie, she can confirm someone who is: James McAvoy, her co-star in M. Night Shyamalan’s new psychological thriller, Split.

It may be a while before we see another sequel in the core X-Men film series, but Fox has a few exciting prospects to keep the franchise kicking along, including Logan, Deadpool 2 and, last but far from least, Josh Boone’s New Mutants spinoff. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the writer and director says he and co-writer Knate Gwaltney originally pitched the project as a trilogy — a concept that’s hardly far-fetched for a few reasons, not the least of which being that the studio kind of needs some new and engaging X-Men properties to keep things fresh. There’s only so many times you can reboot those guys.

It looks like Fox’s long-developing New Mutants project is picking up a bit of steam, as the studio has hired The Fault in Our Stars duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber to write the screenplay for the X-Men spinoff. The pair will reunite with director Josh Boone for the film, which will follow a younger group of mutant outcasts as they cope with newfound powers.

You may recall a rumor from a few weeks back that suggested several members of the lineup for Josh Boone’s New Mutants movie, and although that rumor was predictably denied by Fox, Boone seemingly confirmed those characters for his X-Men spinoff just last week. We can add another rumored character to the confirmed pile, as producer Simon Kinberg has revealed that Professor X does indeed have a role in New Mutants, which could begin filming early next year.

Over the last few days, Josh Boone shared some photos seemingly unveiling his lineup for X-Men spinoff New Mutants, but that’s not the only thing he revealed. The director of The Fault in Our Stars also posted a photo of the title page for his screenplay for the reboot of Interview With the Vampire. Boone followed that with another photo update, which may or may not be part of some weird joke. It’s kind of hard to tell with social media sometimes, you know?
