‘The New Mutants’ Adds a ‘Stranger Things’ Star
For a movie that hasn’t even begun production yet, we certainly seem to know a lot about Josh Boone’s The New Mutants. We know that Boone has pitched The New Mutants as an X-Men take on a “full-fledged horror movie.” We know that James McAvoy will probably appear as Charles Xavier at some point. We know that the Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy, two of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood, have joined on to play Wolfsbane and Magik, respectively. And now we know who will be playing Cannonball, a fan favorite from the original series.
Earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter (via ComingSoon.net) broke the news that The New Mutants have added Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton to the cast as Sam Guthrie, a mutant who can propel himself forward with an invincible force field. Heaton, who played the son of Winona Ryder in Stranger Things, is certainly no stranger (cough) to playing social outcasts looking for a group of misfits to call his own. Man, this is shaping up to be a real Breakfast Club of up-and-coming actors, isn’t it?
While The New Mutants probably won’t be as recognizable to casual comic book fans — many of the characters were created back in 1982 — characters like Cannonball and Wolfsbane have become an integral part of the X-Men comic book universe. As Logan showed earlier this year, there’s no shortage of interesting characters to choose from in the X-Verse, meaning that Boone and company can raid decades worth of comic book history to find the right combination of mutants. Now, if only I could get 20th Century Fox to answer my emails about a Multiple Man movie, we’d be set.
The New Mutants is set to hit theaters on April 13, 2018.
