With the news that Guillermo del Toro is taking a year off after ‘The Shape of Water,’ it doesn’t look like his ‘Pinocchio’ will ever happen.

The noted Mexican filmmaker is all ready to make his anti-fascist dream project, he just needs the money.

Nearly two decades out from his first film, and the viewing public hasn’t gotten any closer to answering the philosophical quandary of what, exactly, a Sam Mendes film is. He’s hopped from an accented dramedy about suburban malaise to a grim-and-gritty graphic novel adaptation to an off-kilter war drama to a pair of coolly-received literary adaptations to James freakin’ Bond. The most effective method of predicting the subject of a new directorial outing from Mendes involves dartboards, tea leaves, and cloud-reading, and today’s announcement of a new project for the esteemed Brit helmer adds yet another baffling left turn to his eclectic oeuvre.

Not to be confused with Disney’s ever-growing slate of live-action remakes which includes a Pinocchio project, Warner Bros.’ has had a Pinocchio movie of their own in development for years, with Robert Downey Jr. attached to play the role of puppet creator Gepetto. After repeatedly failing to secure a director, WB’s Pinocchio may have finally found its maker in Ron Howard, who is reportedly coming aboard to direct the long-gestating live-action take on the classic fairy tale.

Disney announced a slate of 19 upcoming films with release dates through 2020. In addition to Marvel’s Ant-Man 2, three untitled Marvel movies and the release date for The Incredibles 2, Disney also revealed dates for four new live-action fairy tales. According to Variety, the untitled fairy tales will be released on December 22, 2017, November 2, 2018, March 29, 2019 and November 8, 2019. But what could these untitled movies be?

Disney is really going live-action crazy right now. Thanks to the success of Maleficent and Cinderella, the studio is ramping up their plan to give live-action makeovers to their classic animated properties. At this point, it seems fairly inevitable that every one of those classics will be remade as live-action features, like their latest addition: Pinocchio.

The last time we heard from the latest adaptation of 'Pinocchio,' Robert Downey Jr. was attached to star as Geppetto, Tim Burton was attached to direct and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' writer Jane Goldman was rewriting Bryan Fuller's script.
