Shane Black’s The Nice Guys is currently in theaters, and while you have plenty of viewing options this weekend, making time to see his dark crime comedy should be your chief priority. While making the press rounds for that film, Black has been talking up some of his other projects, past and present, including his idea for another Lethal Weapon sequel that he never got to make.

In keeping with the retro vibe (and setting) of The Nice Guys, the latest promo for Shane Black’s crime comedy reimagines the film as an old school animated series — the kind of thing you might have watched on CBS on a Saturday morning back in the ’70s. And while this promo is a little more kid-friendly, it’s still for a film that is most certainly not for kids (but it is for everyone else, and you should make time to see it this weekend).

The Nice Guys opens with a shot of the Hollywood sign in 1977, dilapidated and covered with graffiti. While modern film nerds look back at that era as a kind of Golden Age, the Los Angeles of The Nice Guys is a place that has lost its luster. The town is swimming in smog and porn; it is literally and metaphorically dirty from top to bottom. The crumbling Hollywood sign is historically accurate, but it also makes a convenient symbol, not just of the place as it was, but as it still is — particularly at this time of year, when everything is based on something else and it sometimes feels like the studios are remaking movies that were just released a few weeks earlier.

Another week, another exciting Instagram update from our crazy-busy, impossibly charming and totally ripped pal Dwayne Johnson. Despite his increasingly crowded schedule, it looks like Johnson may have finally found some time to devote to Shane Black’s long-developing Doc Savage movie — thus confirming our suspicions that The Rock may actually be an advanced A.I. that requires no sleep.

Often times the movie business is not at all about movies, but the merchandise that springs off of big studio productions. Because why make a superhero movie if you don’t plan to sell a ton of action figures along with it?

Back in February, 20th Century Fox unveiled the first teaser image for The Predator, Shane Black’s upcoming sequel to the the classic sci-fi action flick. Black has completed work on the screenplay with Fred Dekker (of Monster Squad fame), and during the press tour for his upcoming dark comedy The Nice Guys, the director has revealed that not only will they begin production on The Predator this fall, but that the alien hunter will be getting a bit of a costume upgrade.

Warner Bros. has taken a pretty clever approach to marketing The Nice Guys, Shane Black's new dark comedy noir starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as a mismatched pair of investigators. In keeping with that idea, these new video shorts feature Gosling and Crowe playing fictional versions of themselves, forced to attend couples therapy to work out their issues so they can more amicably promote the film together.

Shane Black’s new Predator movie has a tentative 2018 release date, and while we’ve been promised that it will “reinvent the franchise,” not much is known about the sequel to the classic action sci-fi flick. The Nice Guy director is currently scripting The Predator with Fred Dekker, and has shed a little light (though not too much) on what we can expect, including when the film takes place and if there’s any hope of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return.
