On Thursday evening, plenty of executives went to bed with dreams of big opening weekend numbers in their head. Could the movie about a magical king unseat the movie about a talking tree? Or would a mother-daughter comedy with just the right release date unseat a pair of battling sisters? Now that we’ve reached the end of the holiday weekend, we finally have the numbers, and it turns out the answer was no and no, respectively. Here’s this past weekend’s grosses as of Sunday afternoon:

The calendar may have four seasons, but Hollywood’s calendar only really has two at this point: summer and awards, and summer seems to last longer and longer ever year. Though the start of May has long been the unofficial kickoff of the S.M.S., 2017 has already seen a King Kong movie, a ghost in a shell, and the fate of Fast & Furious franchise. The change from April to May is something of a formality in 2017. Once the Oscars are over, the summer begins.

Sometimes a movie and a release date just make sense. While blockbuster Hollywood releases can often feel like a game of musical chairs  —  where every studio scrambles to find a summer release date that isn’t already occupied by a superhero movie or major franchise —  occasionally, a movie hits theaters at just the right to really leverage a holiday. Take Amy Schumer’s Snatched. With the film set for an April 12 release date, it is perfectly situated to take advantage of Mother’s Day weekend. For once, you can take your mom out to a movie that you might both actually enjoy.

Snatched looks like the mother-daughter adventure film to rule all other mother-daughter adventure films, at least in terms of unpredictable hijinks and not a small amount of raunchiness. Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn’s team-up will be something to see no matter what, and today gives us our very first clip of the madness ahead.

Could the upcoming Amy Schumer/Goldie Hawn buddy comedy Snatched be the Bad Moms of 2017? While last year’s sleeper hit saw some downtrodden moms cutting loose and having a little fun, the new trailer for Snatched explores the tricky bond between a mother and her adult daughter. The Mother’s Day release date underscores the theme of motherhood, and the newly released trailer shows Schumer’s character helping her mom get what’s left of her groove back while on a tropical vacation. They even share a cast member in Wanda Sykes, who appears in the trailer to warn the two women that they’re cruising for an abduction.

Crackle isn’t generally our go-to network for quirky crime dramas, but its Snatch adaptation definitely looks to have captured the spirit of Guy Ritchie’s 2002 crime dramedy. Can you believe it’s been almost 15 years since Goldie Hawn last appeared in a live-action movie? The last time we were treated to a Goldie Hawn performance, Arnold Schwarzenegger was still an actor, not an actor-turned-politician-turned-actor. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise had yet to be launched. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man will in the midst of setting box office records for superhero movies. Resident Evil was expected to kick of a new wave of successful video game adaptations.

The public’s first look at Amy Schumer’s upcoming crime-comedy Snatched came a couple of months ago, when she posted that video of her and her costar Goldie Hawn doing a lightly choreographed dance routine tribute to Beyoncé’s “Formation” and instantly earned the ire of the internet. Somewhat less likely to earn her charges of cultural appropriation, however, is the official red-band trailer for that movie, which Schumer released today in the hopes that she has not yet fallen entirely out of favor with the general public. The people will most likely smile more kindly on Schumer when she’s getting a beverage spat on her instead of putting her face on an anthem for black womanhood — the spit take can bridge any cultural gap, truly.
