After a record-setting September at the box office, 2017 looked like it was getting back on track.

George Clooney’s Suburbicon looks like a high-tension fever dream of suburban America, where a seeming idyll devolves quickly into a hellscape of murder, lies, and broken glasses. It just premiered at TIFF to somewhat mixed reviews, and a new trailer has arrived on the heels of its screening.

Sometimes, directors have to kill their darlings and cut an actor from a movie. Harrison Ford’s school principal role was cut from E.T., Terrence Malick is famous/notorious for doing this to tons of actors, and now George Clooney’s done it to Josh Brolin in Suburbicon.

In the idyllic planned community of Suburbicon, everything appears to be in its right place. Apple-cheeked kids race home from school every afternoon, white picket fences outline immaculately manicured lawns, and a cheery mailman greets you in the same way at the same time every day. But there‘s trouble brewing in this homogeneous paradise. Is that a drop of blood?

The Coen Brothers’ screenplay for Suburbicon has been in various levels of gestation for a little over a decade now, with George Clooney first voicing his interest in directing the project 10 years ago. Clooney’s had a great track record with the Coens, and if there were anyone whose last name isn’t Coen cut out to direct one of their screenplays, it’s most definitely Clooney, who is once again circling the project.
