Universal was initially taking more of a “wait and see” approach to their burgeoning monster movie franchise, but that changed last week when the studio formally announced plans to kick things into high gear. The newly-dubbed and somewhat ambitious “Dark Universe” (not to be confused with Warner Bros.’ long-developing DC film) will feature long-rumored reboots like Bride of Frankenstein and The Wolfman, and rumor has it Universal is eyeing another one of their franchise super-stars to take the lead in the latter.

A new report suggests that the studio has considered going in an exciting new direction with their planned reboot of The Mummy. Specifically, this mummy might be a mommy!

The likes of Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man have no business aping the Marvel “shared universe” structure in the first place. They're monsters! Let them monster! Any of our well-intentioned blogging-into-the-wind was too little, too late because the head of Universal has pretty much come and out said that they're taking the horror out of their horror icons.

Universal is working overtime to revive its classic monster movies for the modern age; the latest classic creature to get a big screen revival is 'The Wolf Man,' a character whose legacy as a horror great trumps the fact that his last big-screen appearance was one of the biggest disasters in the studio's history.

NBC's 'Dracula' may not have scared up the supernatural ratings one would think becoming of a Jonathan Rhys-Meyers take on the iconic vampire, but will 'The Wolfman' really get the blood flowing? Sources report that work has begun on a new adaptation of the classic movie monster for NBC's horror lineup, but with a surprising source of inspiration.
