You're the Worst

FXX favorite and critical darling You’re the Worst won’t continue its worst impulses for Season 3 until late August, but that isn’t stopping the series from a timely addition. Fresh off Orange Is the New Black Season 4 this past weekend, Samira Wiley has broken out of Litchfield and made a run for Gretchen and Jimmy’s out west.

Break out the trash juice and/or goblets of blood, both FX vampire thriller The Strain and breakout FXX dramedy You’re The Worst have official Season 3 premiere dates for summer. When in August can you expect vampire legions of a coastal city to siege our heroes, and ditto for The Strain?

Not only was 2015 a great year for film, but it might have been a more consistently great year for television — so much so that it was impossibly difficult to choose just 10 shows from a list that began with about 15. As such, I want to give honorable mention to a few of the series that would have been included if this were a longer list: Tina Fey’s remarkable new Netflix comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the final (half?) season of Mad Men, the incomparably hilarious and relatable Broad City, the dizzying and dangerous journey of The Jinx, another delightful season of Orange Is the New Black, the final outing of Parks and Recreation and the reliably enthralling Game of Thrones. Oh, and Difficult People! How could I forget Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner’s wonderfully biting Hulu series? See. It was an excellent year.

Break out the Trash Juice, Gretchen and Jimmy are slowly eking their way out from under the garbage fire that is their relationship. FXX has officially renewed critical darling You’re the Worst for a third season in 2016, simultaneously signing creator Stephen Falk for an overall development deal of additional series.

Tonight’s episode of You’re the Worst opens on an uncanny scene: on the surface, the seemingly perfect-yet-still-cool married couple are entirely unfamiliar to us, and yet there’s something about them that feels familiar, as if we’re glimpsing a near-future-ish version of Jimmy and Gretchen. Gretchen sees it too, and it’s not long before “LCD Soundsystem” readjusts to play its exceptionally poignant hand.

FX anti-romcom You’re The Worst may have a slightly less convenient living arrangement by its Season 2 move to FXX, but that’s oddly appropriate for where our core couple left off in Season 1. Before the September 9 premiere, gird your liver against five new trailers for Jimmy and Gretchen’s obviously-doomed cohabitation.

FX spinoff network FXX may still seem like the pasture for less favorable shows, but its September lineup of premieres should put plenty of eyes in focus. Not only will the final season of sports fantasy comedy The League premiere this coming September, but also the second run of critical breakout You’re The Worst.

Whether or not the 2015 Emmy nominations reflect it, FX’s anti-romance You’re The Worst burst onto the comedy scene as one of the better series of the year, soon continuing its greatness with a second run on FXX. We don’t yet know its September premiere date, but the first Worst Season 2 teasers are all we need to destroy what remains of romantic love.

Louis C.K. years earlier broke our hearts with the news that FX’s ‘Louie’ season 4 would be pushed to 2014, and while season 5 will have its own caveat of reduced episodes, we’ll have the Emmy-winning dramedy back even sooner than we hoped. ‘Louie’ season 5 has set its official April premiere, while FX has also plotted the debuts of Billy Crystal’s ‘The Comedians’ and 2014 breakout ‘You’re the Worst.’
