They are sequels and there are remakes and there is the new Vacation, which manages to somehow be both of those things at the same time. It’s a sequel in that it follows the grown-up Rusty (Ed Helms) and his new family, but it’s a remake because, once again, it tracks the Griswold clan as they embark on a cross-country road trip to visit Walley World. And while the original film had its fair share of off-color jokes, the mere existence of this new red-band trailer is all the evidence you need that this remaquel will push the boundaries of the R-rating.

The humor on display in this trailer is sophomoric, juvenile, puerile and all kinds of other words you can yank straight out of a thesaurus, but we’d be lying if we said there aren’t laughs to be had. There’s nothing wrong with nasty humor if the humor actually works and Vacation seems to be betting big on this quartet of clueless and/or mean-spirited characters winning audiences over with their gross-out shenanigans. This is the kind of trailer that features a kid defacing his brother’s guitar with the word vagina and threatening to gun him down on horseback, so you know it’s not going to play nice. Whether any of these jokes will actually function well within the confines of a plot remains to be seen.

Vacation is directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein and opens on July 29, 2015.
