Pan has had disaster written all over it for the better part of a year now, so it’s not surprising that Joe Wright’s Peter Pan origin story stumbled in its opening weekend. However, no one was prepared for it to stumble as badly as it did as it ran face-first into The Martian and Hotel Transylvania 2.

With a reported budget of $150 million, Pan slumped into third place with $15 million. If it goes through all of the expected drops, it will be lucky to hit $50 million at the domestic box office. Heck, it may not even reach $40 million since word of mouth from critics and audiences alike has been uniformly toxic. It isn’t the biggest embarrassment in the top 10 (we’ll get there), but it’s certainly the highest profile disaster of the weekend and easily one of the most prominent bombs of the year. Jupiter Ascending just got some serious competition in that category.

To be fair, Pan was facing down the juggernaut that is The Martian. Ridley Scott’s new science fiction adventure dropped a tiny 32 percent in its second weekend, grossing $37 million for a $108 million total. The film owes its success to an incredible marketing campaign and positive word-of-mouth from audiences who have been telling their friends that they have to see this thing. It’s a genuinely entertaining crowd-pleaser and the box office is reflecting that. It’ll hit $200 million for sure, but we shouldn’t rule out $250 million at this rate.

In third place, Hotel Transylvania 2 continued doing strong, steady business, grossing $20 million for $116 million so far. It may still have a shot at $200 million if it continues to play well into November, but it’ll probably end its run without about $180 million and everyone involved will be happy.

Okay, now let’s talk about The Walk. While Pan is the high-profile bomb of the week that is receiving all of the jeers, Robert Zemeckis’ new film is also a disaster. Granted, it only cost a reported $35 million to produce, but at this rate, it’s not even going to come close to making its money back. After a disappointing start in a limited IMAX run, the film flopped into wide release with only $3 million in seventh place. With a currently gross of only $6 million, it’s going to come and go faster than Pan. If you want to see this movie in theaters, you are going to have to act fast.

With The Intern showcasing strong legs (it’ll cross $50 million on Monday) and Sicario continuing to do solid-if-unremarkable business, the rest of the top 10 was mostly fine. The Visit and Black Mass will both end their runs with $65 million or so, which is solid. Less solid is Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which is still on track to miss its predecessor’s gross by $20 million or so. And that leaves us with Everest, which is just kind of sitting there. It should be out of the top 10 by next week.
