Sometimes I wonder if we know what to do with Patrick Wilson. It’s rare that he’s utilized well, but when he is, Wilson is excellent to watch. The Conjuring, Little Children and Girls all put Wilson’s talents to good use, but then there’s stuff like Zipper…which doesn’t quite seem like the best use of his time. The new trailer showcases a so-so thriller that looks like Shame meets The Ides of March.

I do also wonder if perhaps television is where Wilson feels more at home — he was superb in his one-off episode of Girls, and the second season of Fargo appears to be a promising Wilson venture. Zipper also looks like it would be more at home on television, and sure enough, you’ll be able to find it on VOD at the end of August.

Zipper stars Wilson as a federal prosecutor whose sex addiction and extramarital affairs threaten to undermine his rising career:

Sam Ellis is a man on the rise — a hotshot federal prosecutor on the cusp of a bright political future. But what was meant to be a one-time experience with a high-end escort instead turns into a growing addiction. His moral compass unraveling, his new demon threatens to destroy his life, family and career.

The film also has quite an impressive supporting cast, including Lena Headey, Ray Winstone and Richard Dreyfuss — so although the trailer is just kind of mediocre, the Zipper still has the potential to surprise us when it hits select theaters and VOD on August 28.
