Following a successful collaboration on last year’s The Angry Birds Movie, Sony and Rovio are teaming up for another animated avian outing — that’s not really surprising, since the first film was a fairly big hit at the box office, making it a matter of when, not if, a sequel would happen. That sequel will now officially arrive in 2019, which also happens to be the 10th anniversary of the popular mobile game.

That’s right — by the time The Angry Birds Movie 2 hits theaters, the game will have been around for 10 whole years. Enjoy that existential dread!

In the meantime, Variety reports that Sony and Rovio have officially set a September 20, 2019 release date for the sequel to The Angry Birds Movie, which raked in $350 million at the worldwide box office. The studios have also enlisted a pair of new directors for the animated follow-up: John Rice, whose credits include Rick and Morty, and Thurop Van Orman, an animator who worked on Adventure Time and more recently at Disney and Sony Pictures Animation. That’s an interesting duo, and their combined backgrounds suggest that the new Angry Birds movie might be a little wackier than its predecessor.

The first Angry Birds Movie was directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis, and featured the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Danny McBride and Josh Gad. As of now, it’s unclear which actors might return for the sequel.
