This week's '30 Rock' seemed to be tightly reigned in, and devoid of most of the traditional shenaniganry (and we're not exactly sure that's a word, but it certainly applies to '30 Rock'). Jenna's antic's were toned down, Tracy was well-behaved, and I think the only "wacky" moment in the whole show came from a boxing dummy.
This isn't to say that the show wasn't funny - it's just after nearly a whole season of craziness, a "bottle episode" (no guest stars, limited sets and effects, etc.) comes as a bit of a surprise.
In this case, show's standard three mini-plot formula proved useful, keeping the focus from staying too long in one place helped to keep things from getting dull.
We join our intrepid heroine Liz Lemon on April 14th, as she gets called 'predictable' by her accountant, which might be the most depressing thing that can happen to a person. We're treated to flashbacks that highlight just how repetitive her life seems to be getting, before the theme song break transports us to Jack's office, where Liz begins to realize that more of the same seems to be happening.
Part of a double whammy back to back airing, this '30 Rock' episode is less about madcap plot scrambling, and more: "Hey, remember that Jack's wife got kidnapped?" Along with a generous topping of super-crazy Hazel the page. But did it work?
In the most lighthearted example of New Yorkers hating everything that we've ever seen, this week's '30 Rock' gives the traditional trappings of St. Patrick's Day the same consideration most reserve for swarms of locusts or large groups of hyperactive children.
This week's '30 Rock' episode: "Standards and Practices" kicked off with some easy-pitch meta shenanigans, but still rushed forward with frantic energy that was hard to connect with. Before the title sequence, we're given nearly a half-episode's worth of exposition, covering Kaylie Hooper's (guest star Chloe Moretz) status as Jack's nemesis, the big show, and another Jenna bid for the public's attention.
